Map Tricks and Cool Stuff

With the rising popularity of Google Map and Google Earth these days, the whole world is becoming involved in cartography. If you haven’t check out Google’s street view give it a whirl..it’s pretty cool.

Google “Vancouver”

Follow top link to the Google maps and the city of Vancouver

On top of the zoom tool to the left there is a person figure that is ORANGE if Streetview available in selected area.

Mouse over it and it jumps towards you…click to grab the person with mouse and drag it to any location desired for the street-view experience…the rest is intuitive…360degree view and you can move forward, select addressed features…

3D Fractals

For those of you with a graphics, geometry, biology or math background you are probably aware of Fractals. Wikipedia defines fractals as a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole, a property called self-similarity. Roots of mathematical interest in fractals can be traced back to the late 19th Century; however, the term “fractal” was coined by Benoît Mandelbrot in 1975.

Fractals are pretty cool on a two dimension plane; but check out the 3D fractals for a look at a different though familiar world?

Victoria/Seattle — November 1, 2009 — Clover Point Cartographics (CP), a veteran GIS and application development firm based in Victoria BC, Canada, has developed the next evolution of Enterprise Asset Management (EAM). Through leveraging its extensive GIS experience with application developers from multiple disciplines and industries, CP is now launching a web-based asset management tracking system called the Master Planning Tool to help Fortune 1000 companies more efficiently manage their large scale global assets.

Asset-intensive organizations are operating in highly competitive markets and dealing with high value facilities, equipment, contracts and personnel where every redundancy and each failure is disruptive and costly. Most must also adhere to an ever increasing set of stringent regulations and performance indicators including environmental protection, health and safety, and Sarbanes-Oxley rules.

“Our experience with many Fortune 1000 companies shows that quite often these companies will have assets spread out all across the country, sometimes the globe and often have no centralized mapping process to see what’s happening to those assets at any given moment, and they can be running into EPA fines, security and SOX issues” said Jeff Warwick, Clover Point CEO. “ATA is our web based solution to assist these companies maintain compliance in their assets for the wide variety of regulatory issues they face on a daily basis.”

As an asset management tool, ATA enables a web-based GIS tool to monitor assets visually on a variety of mapping engines (including Google, Yahoo, ESRI, Microsoft, NASA Blue and Open Street) while enabling the integration of any digital components as part of the asset profile.

“We’ve built an elaborate security model into the system to enable multiple parties to contribute information, but only those with the appropriate credentials can see what they need to,” said Karl Swannie, Director of Business Development.

By geospatially enabling asset management, users can easily visualize and understand the geographic context of an asset and find other assets or relevant data located close by. ATA can use map overlays of relevant data to see the geospatial context of the asset. This capability enables organizations to make better operational decisions and easily communicate proposed or actual asset improvements.

ATA also includes a temporal feature enabling predictive assessments for maintenance and compliance planning and for automated alerting features.

For large scale planning ATA has a 3D modeling component which enables the creation of virtual assets for planning, demonstration and assessment functions.

Announcing our new Master Planning Tool The 3D Virtual World Module

Asset Tracking Anywhere (ATA) is the synergy
of GIS and BPM and Gaming Technologies

Victoria/Seattle — November 1, 2009 — Clover Point Cartographics, (CP) a veteran GIS and application development firm based in Victoria BC, Canada, has developed the next world for the property development, urban planning and engineering industries.

“We’re bringing the best of the Geo-spatial information world to the world of business process management and adding in a breakthrough 3D component which is shaking up the urban planning space,” said Jeff Warwick, Clover point CEO. “In fact, as a start, we’re changing how the process of major property development presentations can work.”

Partnering with Microsoft, ESRI and Stantec Engineering, Clover Point is has developed a process for creating 3D virtual communities, not unlike Second Life, specifically aimed at a more immersive experience for urban development planning, presentation and marketing. The module, as a component of Clover Point’s Master Planning Tool, can provide a dynamic view of the infrastructure of a building or a whole site.

“We’re bringing dynamic 3D GIS modeling into the game…and it’s a game changer,” says Karl Swannie, Director of Business Development. “We’re not just building 3D fly through models, but creating a geospatially synced virtual world…a paraverse you could say. And this enables developers to present the future to their stakeholders in a whole new way.”

ATA’s 3D module is primarily being used for property development presentations to engage stakeholders in the decision making process with the goal of coming to a decision more quickly. The ability to walk through a geo-spatially synced virtual community and turn elements on and off on the fly is unique in the industry. ATA’s 3D module is not limited by constraints in computing power unlike traditional 3D architecture modeling systems which are memory intensive. You can run ATA on your laptop and map whole communities to demonstrate how particular developments may impact the existing environment.

“There is no reason we can’t map out a whole town for virtual touring. You can even click on a building in our virtual world and any type of digital file associated with it can be presented,” says Swannie, “and that’s hugely useful for planning, monitoring, security, maintenance, presentation and educational purposes. You can turn buildings on or off, fly under them and see the piping, and if you want, enter the building and sit on the balcony and look at the view.”

We are talking 3D modeling – and we’re pretty excited about it!

In early 2008, Clover Point was solicited by The University of British Columbia and asked to propose a solution for their Campus Simulation and Information System project. The objective of the project was to build a GIS and 3D Modeling System for the Campus and Community Planning Agency at UBC.

Phase 1 saw a GIS data inventory provide the foundation for a 3D modeling campus simulation application. The simulation application was linked through Clover Point’s web-deployed AssetTrackingAnywhere software to provide UBC with an integrated web-based information system to manage their campus.

Phase 2, currently in development, is all about the 3D module – which includes 3D renderings of the entire campus for visualization and strategic planning. Our team has snapped photos, modeled the buildings, and the whole system will be live by summer ’09!
